Aunt Sally's Creamy Pralines

Feb 27.
Pralines and caramel have always been some of my favorite candies. There is just something about milky sugariness that appeals to my palate. Created by Pierre and Diane Bagur in the 1930's.

Logo: Original Creamy Praline

Appearance: B+ Light brown with pieces of pecan visible underneath the surface

Milka Chocolate Creme

Day 51.
As part of my Valentines Day presents I received various chocolates to aid me on my year long quest. One of these was The Milka. I had not heard of the Milka brand but the chocolate is made in Germany and was bought in 1990 by Kraft. It was created in 1901 by Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard. (W) The package invites me to a smooth, rich flavor of Alpine milk.

Logo: Milk Chocolate Confection With Chocolate Creme Filling

Appearance: B Pale chocolate with faint scoring. The cremey center stands out from the milk chocolate coating.
Aroma: B+ Aroma of sweet milk chocolate
Texture: A- Melts in your mouth feel. Creme layer was very soft
Flavor: C- Not much flavor and too much sweetness in the creme layer. The milk chocolate was very creamy with an underwhelming chocolate tast

Calories: 250 cal/serving.
Package contains 2.5 servings. 3.52 oz.

Rating: C (Pass on this one)

Comments: I am not a big fan of chocolate creme and this bar didn't change my mind. The chocolate coating was nice. I would like to try the plain Milka bar

Goldenberg's Original Peanut Chews

Day 49.
I found the Goldenberg's Peanut chews at Cracker Barrel. Since Just Born bought the company in 2003 the name was changed to Chew-Ets Peanut Chews. Just Born must have made a version for Cracker Barrel's store which contains many hard to find candies, chocolate bars and old fashioned wrappers of many newer products. Originally created in 1917 as a World War I ration bar and a Philadelphia favorite since then.

Logo: Chewy Chocolatey Bites Loaded with Crunchy Peanuts.

Appearance: B+ Thin layer of chocolate overlaying a brown middle filled with peanuts.
Aroma: B Peanut with dark chocolate. I couldn't smell any molasses
Texture: B Very firm and chewy bar
Flavor: C Molasses and peanut and not very sweet. Light hint of dark chocolate...their is only a small amount of cocoa present (that's why its labeled as chocolately instead of as chocolate

Calories: 230 cal/serving. Serving size is four pieces/2 per container. 3.3oz.

Rating: B-

Comments: Not a bad peanut chew bar but I would have preferred it to be more chocolatey and sweet.

Cadbury Crunchie

Day 46.
I am reviewing another Cadbury product today. In honor of the Winter Olympics in my opinion, if there was a Chocolate Olympics it would be a tossup between the USA and UK. I realize that most "sophisticated" chocolate palates would probably give the gold to the Swiss but I don't like dark chocolate! The Crunchie was originally created in 1929 by Fry's who later merged with Cadbury.

Logo: Milk Chocolate with Golder Honeycombed Centre.

Appearance: D- Very unusual product. Normal milk chocolate covering but its the center that's unusual. Its hard and honeycomb looking...almost aerated like the Cadbury Wispa but not soft. And the middle is darker.
Aroma: C Chocolate with hints of burnt sugar
Texture: C+ Hard, crunchy and crumbly
Flavor: D Sweet delicious Cadbury milk chocolate but the middle tastes extremely sweet and has a hint of burnt sugar

Calories: 185 cal/serving. One package. 40g.

Rating: D+

Comments: I love Cadbury but this is not my cup of tea! Too sweet and I did not the burnt sugar taste

Aroma: Light aroma of malty milk chocolate
Texture: Crunchy shell with creamy chocolate
Flavor: Very sweet malt taste. Not much chocolate flavor

Calories: 211 cal/serving. One package. 42g.

Rating: D (Go for the M&M's!)

Comments: Definitely not our American M&M's. I didn't like the overwhelming taste of malty weak chocolate. Stick with Cadbury for UK chocolate

Green Bay Puddles

Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel

Day 40.
Another Cadbury creation. The Dairy Milk is one of my favorite plain chocolate bars. The addition of caramel has to be good. I am hopeful that Kraft doesn't mess around with Cadbury.

Appearance: Light brown chocolate divided into six minibars
Aroma: Milky chocolate with even more milky tasting caramel.
Texture: Nice bite to the chocolate which melts in your mouth. The caramel is gooey.
Flavor: Delicious milk chocolate taste. With the caramel present the milk chocolate tastes great/not so sweet.

Hershey's Special Dark with Almonds

Day 39.
When I was younger and my parents would buy a bag of Hershey miniatures these would always be the last to be eaten. As the years have gone by my taste for darker chocolates has expanded to some extent but I still prefer sweet milk chocolate! On the Hershey website its advertised as the Dark Chocolate for Milk Chocolate Lovers and gives nutritional information and the amounts of antioxidants.

Logo: Mildly Sweet Chocolate
History: Created by Hershey for their miniatures collection in 1939 (W)

Appearance: Thin very dark bar with almonds mixed in. No almonds visible from the top.
Aroma: Bitter dark chocolate

Calories: 190 cal/serving. One bar. 1.45 oz. 45% Cacao.

Rating: C+ (Average but I don't like dark chocolate)

Cadbury Curly Wurly

Day 38.
I received my box of Cadbury chocolates from BritishDelights.com today which I enthusiastically ordered last week. And what better way to celebrate the Saints win this weekend than with a Curly Wurly bar. While checking out nostalgic candy I found on Oldtimecandy.com that there was a replacement for the Marathon bar which was one of my favorites as a child. The thick caramel bar covered with chocolate was amazing. Even the red wrapper with a ruler was one of a kind. I think one of John Wayne's kids came out on the commercials which claimed it lasted a long, long time.

Logo: Milk Chocolate with Caramel Centre
History: Produced by Cadbury since 1970. The Marathon was created by Mars in 1973. (C)

Appearance: Very thin bar about 1/2 cm. The chocolate is less than 1/2 mm thick. Appears like two braids of chocolate with lots of gaps in between
Aroma: Scent caramel and lightly of chocolate
Texture: Very chewy caramel
Flavor: Very sweet and milky tasting caramel. Milky chocolate coating. Its been years since I had a Marathon but I think the caramel is sweeter and more milky tasting.

Calories: 115 cal/serving. One bar. 26g.

Rating: A- (Highly recommended)

Comments: Excellent chocolate and caramel bar. Reminds me of the old Marathon except the Marathon was thicker and not as sweet.

3 Musketeers

Day 37.
The 3 Musketeers has been a popular candy bar since it was the third brand made by Mars in 1932 and is noted for its whipped nougat and milk chocolate. Once upon a time it was actually three candy bars which were strawberry, vanilla and chocolate. During the war the price of strawberry increased and only the chocolate flavor was retained. Outside of America the 3 Musketeers is called the Milky Way. (B,W)

3 Musketeers Truffle Crisp Bars

What is a truffle? A fungus? A chocolate with a center filing? According to Wikipedia a chocolate truffle is "a type of chocolate confectionery, traditionally made with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate or cocoa powder, usually in a spherical, conical, or curved shape. Other fillings may replace the ganache: cream, melted chocolate, caramel, nuts, almonds, berries, or other assorted sweet fruits, nougat, fudge, or toffee, mint, chocolate chips, marshmallow, and, popularly, liquor. They are named for their resemblance to the truffle fungus." Now you may ask what is a ganache? It is a filling made from chocolate and cream.

Chocolate bar line extensions seem to be very popular with the big three chocolate makers. In days past new candy bars would have have different and unique names. Created by Mars in 2009.

Smooth and shiny bar with swirls. Nice milk chocolate aroma and flavor. Not chewy like the regular bar of milk chocolate and nougat. Wafer doesn't taste like much.

Grade: C-. Very tiny bar with the low caloriesto match. Leaves me wanting more so I would probably eat two. In addition, it tasted like a 3 Musketeers but didn't have the texture or chewiness. Eat the real one! 170 cal/serving.

Pay Day King Size

Day 33.
I definitely like my Pay Day every two weeks....now the bar on the other hand I remember enjoying these as a kid but not quite as often. I remember lots of salty peanuts on top and caramel once you bit into it. With all the peanuts it resembles an energy bar. A few years ago there was a higher protein energy bar called Pay Day Pro.

Logo: Peanut caramel bar
History: The Payday bar was first introduced in 1932 by Frank Martoccio of the Martoccio Macaroni Company which later became Hollywood Brands. Later sold to Consolidated Foods Corporation/Sara Lee in 1967. In 1988, Hollywood Brands became part of Leaf, Inc which was then purchased by Hershey Foods Corporation in 1996. (W)

Appearance: Lots of peanuts almost completely surrounding and stuck onto the caramel. The inside is solid.
Aroma: All peanuts
Texture: Chewy caramel and crunchy peanuts
Flavor: Very salty on the outside just like advertised...almost too much but then when you get a taste of the sweet caramel it goes together well. Peanuts fresh and tasty.
Calories: 220 cal/serving. Two servings. 3.4 oz bar.

Rating: B (If your hungry and want peanuts)

Comments: Good tasting combination of sweet caramel and salty crunchy peanuts. Just make sure you eat it fast as the outer peanuts are very salty.
